Description
The simplest definition of a Commode is “A piece of furniture with drawers and shelves”. In early 18th-century France, the word commode meant a chest of drawers or a cabinet for storing personal items. The word derives from the French word for “convenient” or “suitable”. A commode is a low cabinet or chest of drawers, often with elaborate decoration and usually standing on cabriole legs. Commodes were meant to stand against the wall and were wider than they were tall. The use of the word to describe this piece of furniture dates back to the reign of Louis XIV in the early 18th Century. Over the decades, many varying styles were created, including commodes that included the use of tall cabriole legs, drawers hidden behind doors, and the addition of shelves and cupboards. In general the word commode refers to any heavy, ornate chest of drawers, the more elaborately decorated the better. By the 18th Century, the commode had become a prominent piece of Rococo furniture. According to the Dictionary of Furniture the term commode, signifying convenience and accommodation, was first applied to a heavy-bodied chest with three or more tiers of drawers set on four short legs. It further states that commodes were used by some people in the 18th and 19th Centuries to store chamber pots. Hence, the commode became a euphemistic substitute for night table or pot cupboard at that time.
