Description

The design of the Quatrefoil Dining Table was inspired by the age old symbol of harmony, wholeness, and good fortune – the quatrefoil. The word quatrefoil means four leaves, from the Latin “quattuor” which means four, and “folium” meaning leaf. The quatrefoil enjoyed its peak popularity during the Gothic and Renaissance eras. It is most commonly found as tracery, mainly in Gothic architecture, where a quatrefoil is often seen at the top of a Gothic arch. Although the design is often thought of as having an Islamic origin, there are examples of its use that predate the birth of Islam by almost 200 years. Shah Gilani, ISFD, while designing this table used the Mughal version of the quatrefoil which is found in carved stone screens (jali) in buildings of the period all across India. The quatrefoil symbolizes faith, hope, love, and luck due to its four-lobed, clover-like shape. Its meaning varies across cultures, but common associations include the four evangelists in Christianity, the four cardinal directions in Native American cultures, and protection and rebirth in ancient Asian cultures. The Quatrefoil Dining Table Base is made by a casting process. Molten metal is poured into a mold that can be used only once. The rough casting is smoothed by a master craftsman. This is a long and laborious process requiring great attention to detail. The final product receives one of our hand-applied multi-layer finishes. The robust metal base is designed to support a heavy glass or other top without flexing.
