Art Deco Tub Chair

This Art Deco Tub Chair was designed by Shah Gilani, ISFD. There’s no absolute record of when the tub chair was invented or who invented it, but what we do know is that one of the first tub chairs were used at the court of King Louis XV of France. The term ‘tub chair’ was coined when the chair was exported to America in the late 18th century. In 1797 a Boston cabinet maker called George Bright started reproducing his own version of the European chair which until then was not very popular. Then an American designer named Charles F Montgomery noticed the chair and gave it it’s interesting name. It’s at this point that interest in this chair took off. The chair got this strange name because it’s shape resembled an old fashioned bath tub. As the design’s popularity increased it was reintroduced to Europe and to Britain. In Victorian England the tub chair became very popular amongst the gentry and would be found in the homes of the well-to-do. It was also seen in many of the gentleman’s clubs. The 20th century saw a resurgence of comfortable and simplistic seating design, particularly during the Art Deco period. The design was further modernised in the 1950’s by French designers who bedecked the chair in sumptuous fabrics and colors. The tub chair went somewhat out of favor in the 1970’s, but at the dawning of the 21st century, with renewed interest in all things retro, made a remarkable comeback. Nowadays it’s seen as a comfortable and practical piece of furniture that is available in a wide variety of patterns, styles, and fabrics. The humble tub chair seems to keep on evolving and adapting.
