Amarna Lounge Chair

The design of the Amarna Lounge Chair was inspired by the city of that name in Ancient Egypt. When Pharaoh Amenhotep IV came to power with his wife Nefertiti, he changed his name to Akhenaten, made a dramatic shift in Egyptian culture and declared that Egypt would be monotheistic worshipping the god Aten. The capital was moved from Thebes to Amarna. People came from all over Egypt to build this new city out of mudbrick and stone. Workers included sculptors, scribes, builders, farmers, administrators and craftspeople. Art from the Amarna period depicted the pharaoh and his family in a more active, upbeat manner, interacting directly with their children. The move to a new capital brought essential changes in the depictions of royal women. It was in their female imagery, above all, that the artists of Amarna departed from the traditional iconic representations to emphasize the individual in a natural way. This was unprecedented in Egyptian art. A picture of exceptional intimacy emerges from the sculptures and reliefs of the Amarna period. Akhenaten, his wife Nefertiti, and their six daughters are seen in emotional interdependence as they participate in cult rituals. The workshop of the sculptor Thutmose revealed a treasure trove when it was excavated. The daily life in the city was busy, with a lot of work going into preparing offerings for the sun god. It was home to palaces, workshops, tombs, roads, cemeteries, and thousands of houses. The city had a wealthy elite who lived in spacious villas and had lavish tombs.
