Pompeian Cabinet

Description

The design of the Pompeian Cabinet was based on a cabinet found during excavations at Pompeii. It is named for an ancient Roman city near modern Naples, in the Campania region of Italy. Pompeii was completely destroyed and buried under 13 to 20 feet of volcanic ash during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The city has an interesting history. It came under Roman domination in the 4th century BC. It was conquered and became a Roman colony in 80 BC. By the time of its destruction a century later, its population was estimated at 11,000. The city had a complex water system, an amphitheater, a gymnasium, and a port. The eruption destroyed the city, killing its inhabitants and burying it under tons of ash. The site was lost for almost 1,500 years until its initial rediscovery in 1599, and broader rediscovery 150 years later by the Spanish engineer Rocque Joaquin de Alcubierre. The objects that lay beneath the ash had been preserved for centuries because of the lack of air and moisture. These artifacts provide an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city during the Pax Romana.

The Pompeian Cabinet can be used as a buffet in high end residential and hospitality interiors. There are two Melamine-lined drawers behind the doors which run smoothly on high quality drawer slides. There is one removable shelf in each compartment. The doors with metal lattice-work have high quality self-closing hinges. The door pulls and drawer pulls are hand-forged polished bronze. The Pompeian Cabinet is offered in a variety of finishes and accents. Six polished bronze glides are provided which also serve as levelers – a useful feature to have when the floor is uneven.
