The design of this Venetian Fainting Couch was based on an antique chaise longue. These couches became common in the 19th century when Turkish fainting couches became popular. As coil-spring technology allowed for more comfortable cushioning and upholstery, they served more and more as a place of respite for napping or reading. A fainting couch is really just a luxurious form of a daybed. The term has been used interchangeably with settees and chaise longues, though there are some distinctions. Fainting couches are typically longer and narrower than chaise longues, which tend to be wider and more bulky. It is popularly believed that in the 19th century women would faint due to their corsets being too tight, restricting blood flow. A few moments on a fainting couch would help them recuperate. There is an interesting connection between Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, and the fainting couch. When his therapy sessions would carry on for hours on end, he’d invite patients to relax on his fainting couch. It was his way of making them feel more at ease with sharing their personal issues. The Venetian Fainting Couch was designed by Shah Gilani, ISFD. It is offered in a variety of hand-applied multilayer finishes and wood stains. Custom sizing is available.
