King Tut Lion Bed

Description

Design of the King Tut Lion Bed was inspired by the ritual bed found in Tutankhamun’s tomb which was discovered by Howard Carter in 1922. He later wrote, ‘At first I could see nothing, the hot air escaping from the chamber causing the candle flame to flicker, but presently, as my eyes grew accustomed to the light, details of the room within emerged slowly from the mist, strange animals, statues, and gold – everywhere the glint of gold.’ Amongst these treasures were three couches in animal form, each of which was made of wood, covered in gold. In front was the lion bed, while behind it were two beds composed of elements of a cow and a hippopotamus.

The King Tut Lion Bed is made of metal by a casting process. Molten metal is poured into a mold that can be used only once. The rough casting is smoothed by a skilled craftsman. This is a long and laborious process requiring great attention to detail. The final product receives one of our multi-layer hand-applied finishes. Designed by Shah Gilani, ISFD.
