Plato Writing Table

Description

Furnishings of ancient Greece were the source of inspiration for the Plato Writing Table. Although no ancient Greek furniture has survived the centuries, Greek artwork such as pottery decorations and friezes depict daily life in Greek homes. This has given us an accurate idea of early Greek furniture design. It was one such image on a kylix of a stool which inspired Shah Gilani, ISFD, to design the Plato Writing Table. The Ancient Greeks called the folding stool diphros okladias. Shah took the legs from this stool and redesigned them so that they could be made of metal. A wood top with drawers was added to complete the writing table.

With its unique design, the Plato Writing Table makes an eye-catching desk for residential and hospitality interiors. The legs are made by a casting process. Molten metal is poured into a sand mold that can be used only once. The rough casting is smoothed by a skilled craftsman using hand files. This is a long and laborious process requiring painstaking attention to detail. The top is handmade of the finest rosewood. The melamine-lined drawers are equipped with self-closing slides and solid bronze ring pulls. Robust metal construction ensures sturdiness of this table even under heavy loads. Four polished bronze glides are provided which also serve as levelers – a useful feature to have when the floor is uneven. Custom sizing is available. This exquisite writing table is offered in a variety of hand-applied finishes and wood stains.
