According to the dictionary Zen is a state of calm attentiveness in which one’s actions are guided by intuition rather than by conscious effort. The term Zen is derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the Middle Chinese word Chán, which traces its roots to the Indian practice of dhyāna or meditation. In a nutshell Zen is insight into the nature of things and the personal expression of this insight in daily life, especially for the benefit of others. As such, it de-emphasizes mere knowledge of scripture and doctrine. Instead it favors direct understanding through spiritual practice and interaction with an accomplished teacher. A Japanese Zen garden is conceived and created from the meditative inspiration of the gardener, and contemplating one is a doorway to meditation for the viewer. Bamboo is an important design element for Zen Gardens. Bamboo also plays an important role in traditional Chinese culture and is regarded as a behavior model of an upright individual. As bamboo has features such as uprightness, tenacity, and modesty, people endow bamboo with integrity, elegance, and plainness, even though it is not physically strong. According to eastern beliefs a person does not need to be physically strong, but must be mentally strong, upright, and persevering. Just as a bamboo is hollow-hearted, one should open one’s heart to accept anything of benefit and never have arrogance or prejudice. In Japan, a bamboo forest sometimes surrounds a Shinto shrine as part of a sacred barrier against evil.
